Die Hard

The legacy of “Die Hard”

Lockout (2012)

Lockout PosterIt’s Die Hard…
in space, or to be more specific: a space station prison.

Is the main character an average Joe?
No, he’s an ex-CIA operative wrongly convicted of a conspiracy.

Sidekick?
The daughter of the president, who he is supposed to rescue, goes all Under Siege’s Jordan Tate (including a short haircut, but minus the boobs) and instead of leaving the space station the first chance she gets she stands up help save the other hostages.

Any personal problems?
Mostly legal ones. He’s been falsely accused of a conspiracy and is facing 30 years in cryo-statis (Like in Demolition Man). He gets an opportunity to go to the space station prison and rescue the daughter of the president (Like in The Rock)

Is the lead character there by coincidence?
No, just as Sean Connery in The Rock he’s going there with a mission.

Are there any friends or family in danger?
His friend who can help him prove his innocence is one of the inmates.

What’s at stake and why aren’t the authorities doing anything?
They are doing something, but because the president’s daughter is on the space station so he won’t sign off on any actions that might endanger his daughter like say blowing the entire station to smithereens.

Any charismatic villains?
Peter Stormare plays a government official but he’s not really the bad guy here. That would be two brothers who lead the prison break out. One of them is bat-shit crazy, the other kinda bland. None of them have real charisma.

Is it any good?
Well, it’s better than most of the cheapo rip-offs there are out there, but it’s no classic either. This is one of those movies that went straight to video over here and it’s not hard to see why. The special effects are so-so especially early on in a chase sequence which is clearly 95% computer generated. Something which was also the case in other classics like Torque and XXX 2. Then there’s the fact that the movie is filled with elements from better movies. Not only does it rip Die Hard, but also Under siege, The Rock, Con Air, Demolition Man and more.

  1. They are planning a remake, I would go for Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Joe Manganiello, Milo Ventimiglia, Tom Welling, Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Runner, Derek Theler, or D.J. Cotrona as Gabe Walker; and Billy Zane, Kevin Spacey, Dominic Pace, Alec Baldwin, Gil Banks, Hugo Weaving, Robert Knepper, Brian Van Holt, Travis Fine, Skeet Ulrich, or Dash Mihok as Qualen.

  2. I think there is a way to improve The Taking of Beverly Hills, like instead an undercover Fed helped crippled a militia group and imprisoned many members including their leader. But the leader’s brother and a few members of the group plant bombs all over Beverly Hills, and threaten to set them off if the leader is not released, and the undercover fed seeks out the bombs while his partners buy him time.

  3. Blast is good, but it would be worthwhile to note that, Agent Lisa Reed (Vivica A. Fox) finds out that Michael Kittridge (Vinnie Jones) is actually a mercenary named Skyler Talbot and had killed the real Kittridge and stole his identity to throw off authorities.

    • There are some sites that list it as streamable, but I don’t know how legit they are. If you own an XBMC player I would advise you to look on that network.

  4. Don’t forget the other scenarios like Terminal Rush, Interceptor, Crash Dive, Counter Measures, 12 Rounds: Reloaded, 12 Rounds: Lockdown, Project: Shadow Chaser, Command Performance, Demolition University, Cyberjack/Virtual Assassin, Final Voyage, and Air Rage.

  5. For Speed 2: Cruise Control, it should have been Direct to Video, and not a sequel to Speed. The lead villain should have been a pirate instead of soft ware designer turned mad bomber trying to blow up a ship.

  6. Every time I see “Air Force One” I remember that in the Tom Clancy novels, the character of Jack Ryan becomes president. This film could have been part of the saga starring Harrison Ford, if he had continued it.
