Die Hard

The legacy of “Die Hard”

The Last Siege a.k.a. Hijack (1999)

The Last Siege PosterIt’s Die Hard…
on a train.

Is the main character an average Joe?
No he’s an ATF Agent named Eddie Lyman (Jeff Fahey)

Sidekick?

No, he’s on his own.

Any personal problems?
He’s suspended for ignoring direct orders during a raid on the secret hide out of a right wing militia. He has a personal vendetta against the leader of this militia because that man is responsible for killing his wife and child.

Is the lead character there by coincidence?
Being suspended he decided to tag along with his girlfriend, who’s the press secretary for the campaigning Senator Douglas Wilson (Ernie Hudson)

Are there any friends or family in danger?
His girlfriend. She’s the last hostage they have and so it’s up to him to save her.

What’s at stake and why aren’t the authorities doing anything?
A militia group wants to detonate a nuclear bomb. The authorities are aware of the situation but the train went dark so they don’t know where he is, only ATF Agent Eddie is now able to stop them. Halfway in the film they catch up with the train and actually help to put an end to the situation. At this point Eddie is off the train and only his girlfriend is still a hostage. He gets transported to the train again by helicopter and rescues kills the last terrorist, disarms the bomb and saves the day.

Any charismatic villains?
Brent Huff is David Anderson, the lead villain and totally unmemorable. He’s aided with amongst other Patrick Kilpatrick. Sound familiar? He was one of the henchmen in Under Siege 2.

Is it any good?
No not really. It surprises me that this movie had a theatrical run in 1999. It was called Hijack at the time. The release of the DVD came 3 years later in 2002 for which it was renamed The Last Siege. They also made the title resemble the title of Under Siege 2 and put a burning train on the cover just like that movie has. I’m pretty sure they were trying to trick people into thinking this was Under Siege 3 or something like that. You can read my review here.

  1. They are planning a remake, I would go for Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Joe Manganiello, Milo Ventimiglia, Tom Welling, Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Runner, Derek Theler, or D.J. Cotrona as Gabe Walker; and Billy Zane, Kevin Spacey, Dominic Pace, Alec Baldwin, Gil Banks, Hugo Weaving, Robert Knepper, Brian Van Holt, Travis Fine, Skeet Ulrich, or Dash Mihok as Qualen.

  2. I think there is a way to improve The Taking of Beverly Hills, like instead an undercover Fed helped crippled a militia group and imprisoned many members including their leader. But the leader’s brother and a few members of the group plant bombs all over Beverly Hills, and threaten to set them off if the leader is not released, and the undercover fed seeks out the bombs while his partners buy him time.

  3. Blast is good, but it would be worthwhile to note that, Agent Lisa Reed (Vivica A. Fox) finds out that Michael Kittridge (Vinnie Jones) is actually a mercenary named Skyler Talbot and had killed the real Kittridge and stole his identity to throw off authorities.

    • There are some sites that list it as streamable, but I don’t know how legit they are. If you own an XBMC player I would advise you to look on that network.

  4. Don’t forget the other scenarios like Terminal Rush, Interceptor, Crash Dive, Counter Measures, 12 Rounds: Reloaded, 12 Rounds: Lockdown, Project: Shadow Chaser, Command Performance, Demolition University, Cyberjack/Virtual Assassin, Final Voyage, and Air Rage.

  5. For Speed 2: Cruise Control, it should have been Direct to Video, and not a sequel to Speed. The lead villain should have been a pirate instead of soft ware designer turned mad bomber trying to blow up a ship.

  6. Every time I see “Air Force One” I remember that in the Tom Clancy novels, the character of Jack Ryan becomes president. This film could have been part of the saga starring Harrison Ford, if he had continued it.
